Writers, poets, and musicians: We need you!

On Saturday, September 26, 2015, we are inviting poets, other writers, and musicians to present their work that provides a voice for our need for change–the type of change that is required in order to achieve peace, sustainability, and justice for all of us, all people of our world. This is part of a WORLDWIDE MOVEMENT; on that day, over 500 similar events are registered to take place in over 100 countries, and that number is growing daily.

100 Thousand Poets for Change is a global effort to hold events, encourage discussions, raise awareness about what changes are needed to improve our living conditions and political situations, and possibly even take steps toward creating changes. Participants may choose to speak to the need for change on any level: within oneself, within one’s community, nationwide, or globally. Since the ultimate goal of this movement is to make those changes a reality, we hope these events will help break down barriers among us, so that we may stand together to make those changes occur. The focus on what types of changes are needed is determined by the people participating and making their voices heard in each local event. This is an opportunity for you to voice your opinion about what is needed in your community, your country, your world!

People of all ages are strongly encouraged to take part in the event; we feel we need to hear the views and opinions of our young people, as they are our future, and sometimes their vision is startlingly clear.

We ask that all work presented focus on the theme of change, which may include any or all of the following: exposing the reality of conditions that need to be changed, helping us to learn more about the people affected by those conditions, dealing with the causes of these conditions, proposing ways that these conditions can be improved, and more. To put it simply, your work might deal with the problems people face, the people suffering from the problems, causes of the problems, and/or solutions to the problems.

We are mainly seeking original work; however, if a musician wishes to perform a cover of a song about the theme of change by another artist, that would also contribute greatly to the event. Please sign up here to let us know if you wish to participate!

We will not have a precise idea how much time we can allow for each person’s presentation until we have a better idea of how many people will be available for evening presentations or no. However, we believe that the maximum amount of time allowed for each presentation will be 10, and may need to be limited to as little as 5 minutes each. Groups of performers may be allowed more time to perform, if desired. Please check back here for updates!

We thank you sincerely for being a part of this effort. With your help, we hope to be able to bring together the many diverse and unique people that make up our communities and bring about some of the changes that are needed.

FOR EDUCATORS: If you wish for your students to participate in this effort, I have a “Writing Topic” which I developed for use with a friend’s middle school Language Arts class. I would be happy to e-mail this to you, to be adjusted and adapted for use with your own class; please feel free, of course, to use as much or as little of this as you see fit! I believe it would be most appropriate for use with students sixth-grade through twelfth-. In the writing prompt, we ask young writers to answer the seemingly simple questions of “Who are you?” and “How are you?” We hope that hearing their responses will allow all of us, young people and old alike, to learn from them, as their clarity of vision often goes unparalleled. We hope that by discovering what the human experience is like for our young people today—which includes the problems they face and what positive factors help them to deal with those—will help break down barriers among us, so we may stand together to solve our common problems.
