ROME, Ga.— The Berry College “Writing and Community” class invites local high school students to take part in a series of creative writing workshops beginning Oct. 28.
“Utterances: A young writers workshop” will be taught by seven Berry senior creative writing students. The workshops will be from 6:30-8 p.m. Oct. 28, Nov. 4, Nov. 13, Nov.18, and Dec. 2 at the Sara Hightower Regional Library. For more information go to www.facebook.com/utterancesworkshop.
The Berry writing students also recently hosted a poetry event in partnership with People of Extraordinary Talent (P.O.E.T) of Northwest Georgia to raise money for the revival of Southeast Elementary’s “Writers Academy.” The event was under the umbrella of the Rome Poetry Night series, and in conjunction with a global event day designated by “100 Thousand Poets for Change.” Organizers said the evening attracted one of the largest turnouts in the poetry night’s 24-year-history with about 100 people in attendance. The Kingdom Poets and the Georgia Highland chapter of Brother 2 Brother also participated in the readings.
Thanks to everyone who came out to the Bring Change poetry night tonight, and congratulations to the students who so beautifully organized the event and who shared their truly fabulous work with an audience of nearly 100! Wonderful community togetherness with Rome Poetry Night, with P.O.E.T. of Northwest Georgia, Berry College, Kingdom, and Georgia Highland poets all sharing the stage to raise money for the Writers Academy at Southeast Elementary–and now we’ve got a lot of change to count Thanks to all! And a special shout out to MC extraordinaire Bailey Merlin! –Sandra Meek
