It Could Be Verse is the in-house poetry club at Symbiosis School for Liberal Arts, Pune, India. We hold monthly poetry readings, workshops and events. One of these recurring events is Reclaiming The Margins, where the entire student body and faculty participates in a reading and performance of literature, specifically poetry, from a marginalized community. The intention here is not to appropriate, but rather spread awareness to the best of our ability, while being conscious of our own privileged position. Our theme for this month is Queer Poetry, in light of the recent Supreme Court judgement in India that struck down Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, which criminalized homosexuality and other forms of ‘unnatural’ sex. This month, we will also be celebrating the annual 100 Thousand Poets for Change day by inviting other artists to perform at our event – whether musicians, dancers or visual artists to exhibit their talent (with reference to the theme) at the event!
