Woodrow Wilson Poetry Club’s
youth voices: a 100 Thousand Poets for Change event
INFORMATION FOR STUDENT POETS.
Below you will find information about this event, the greater experience of which we will be a part (100 Thousand Poets for Change), and of course, us, the Wilson High School Poetry Club.
THE EVENT – youth voices
We have so many gifted youth poets, in the Washington metropolitan area, who clearly communicate their truth; their understanding of, or experience, within the emotional/environmental/societal ills that adversely impact their lives. They talk of barriers that break them down or propel them forward. They speak of the change they’d like to see. This is the perfect opportunity to give them the stage that their voices be heard. That the change their world needs may come…

WILSON High School POETRY CLUB
The Wilson High School Poetry Club is a student organization of Woodrow Wilson High School, a DC Public School. It was founded in January of 2012 through our library media program and is open to all students. Media specialist, Pamela Gardner, is our sponsor.
Our purpose is twofold:
- To nurture and strengthen our poetry writing and performance skills
- To use our poetic voices to build community.
To that end, we:
- meet weekly with a poetry coach/ nationally recognized slam poet, George Yamazawa (of Split This Rock – a 501c3 poetry organization)
- sponsor monthly open mics during STEP (lunch)
- perform at school and community events
- sponsor and/or participate in friendly slam competitions or open mics with other youth poetry organizations
Each winter, we select 4 to 6 members to represent us and our school in the “Louder Than A Bomb DMV” slam poetry competition. Last year, we placed 1st in that competition.
