Musa Starseed, Hip Hop Artist/Musician/Poet

Musa Starseed is an award winning filmmaker, artist, musician, dancer, youth mentor, and community leader living in Boulder, Colorado. Musa has dedicated the trajectory of his artistic gifts and talents to uplift, inspire, and motivate his community towards values such as, empowerment, health, expression, cultural competency, and integrity. Mike Klymkowsky,  Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology

Mike Klymkowsky is a Professor of Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology at the University of Colorado Boulder. He has received degrees in biophysics from Pennsylvania State University and the California Institute of Technology, and was a post-doctoral
fellow at University College London and Rockefeller University before moving to Boulder. His biological researches span a number of topics, including neurotransmitter receptor structure, cytoskeletal organization and ciliary function, neural crest formation, and signaling systems in the context of the clawed frog Xenopus laevis and most recently in human induced pluripotent stem cell derived cerebral organoids, in collaboration with William Old (UC Boulder).

In the area of biology education research, he developed (with Kathy Garvin-Doxas) the NSF- supported Biological Concepts Instrument (BCI), as well as a suite of virtual laboratory activities in molecular biology with Tom Lundy. He has been involved with the general question of how to develop more rigorous, coherent, and engaging courses and curricula in the biological sciences, including a re-designed introductory evolutionary, molecular, and systems biology course – Biofundamentals and general chemistry – Chemistry, Life, the Universe & Everything (CLUE), both with Melanie Cooper (Chemistry – Michigan State University). This has led to his involvement in the recruitment and training of science teachers through the CU Teach program and the development of the “Teaching and Learning Biology” course with Erin Furtak, taught at both UC Boulder and the ETH in Zurich, Switzerland. He was a Pew Biomedical Scholar, a founding fellow of the Center for STEM Learning at UC Boulder, and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He was named the 2012-2013 Outstanding Undergraduate Science Teacher by the Society for College Science Teaching and received a 2014 Boulder Faculty Assembly Teaching Excellence award.

Valerie A. Szarek, Artist/Poet/Musician/Healer

 

Valerie Szarek’s voice and Native Flute is familiar at open mikes and festivals in the Boulder/Denver area as well as the Western Slope. Her poetry is human, political, and Shamanic, and crosses between the seen and unseen worlds effortlessly. Her music and words are Medicines for our world. Her poetry book Signs of Life was a Colorado Author’s League Award finalist and received an EVVY Award. Her Poem Letters to an Unknown God won 1st place in the National Poetry Federation Winner’s Circle and was a Colorado Author’s League Finalist. She’s been a featured poet at the International Young Leadership Conference in 2013, numerous Stage C performances, Karen chamberlain poetry Festival, and won 2nd place as the Ziggies Denver Poet of the Year in 2015 and 2017. She’s been a student of poetry at the Jack Kerouac school of Disembodied Poetics Summer Writing program at Naropa since 2005. Leo Radzihovsky, Theoretical Physics

Leo Radzihovsky was born June 2, 1966, in Leningrad, Soviet Union (now Saint Petersburg, Russia) and immigrated to the United States
in 1980, growing up in western Massachusetts. He studied physics and electrical engineering at RPI, graduating with a BS and MS as a valedictorian in 1988, receiving the Apker award for his undergraduate research and going on to Harvard, to study theoretical physics, graduating with a MA and PhD in 1993. After spending two years as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Chicago, Leo began his tenure in 1995 as a Professor at the University of Colorado, where he has taught and done research since. At CU, Leo studies theoretical aspects of exotic materials such as superfluids, quantum magnets, polymers, liquid crystals and nonequilibrium dynamics, work that has been recognized by a number of awards over the years, most notably by the Packard and Sloan fellowships, and most recently by the James Simons Investigator Award. A Fellow of American Physical Society and a Director and Founder of the annual Boulder School for Condensed Matter and Materials Physics, Leo is an author of over 110 publications, was a visiting professor at Harvard, MIT, Berkeley, and most recently at the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics. Outside of academics, Leo is a hockey, soccer and downhill ski enthusiast, and enjoys discussing on broad range of topics. Melissa La Flamme, Author/Poet/Jungian Psychotherapist

Melissa La Flamme is a visionary artisan of cultural evolution. As an author, poet, writer and Troublemaker, she kindles soul’s smoldering longing for everything real. As a Jungian, shamanic psychotherapist, she helps hack and track the smell of our longing to fully inhabit our life. David P. Pappas, Quantum Computing

David Pappas received a B.A. in Physics from the University of Colorado in Boulder and
Ph.D. at the University of California, Irvine working in the area of magnetism and
quantum effects at crystalline surfaces He is Fellow of the American Physical Society, a
Senior Member of the IEEE, Silver Medal awardee at NIST, and was awarded an NSF
Young Investigator award.. At UCI David worked as an IBM Graduate Research
Fellowship and went on to do post-doctoral work first at IBM Almaden Research Center
and then at the Naval Research Laboratory as an Office of Naval Technology Research
Fellow. David was an Assistant Professor at Virginia Commonwealth University and then
returned to Boulder to work at NIST in the magnetic data storage project. He continued
basic research into the physics of magnetic phase transitions at surfaces and also
developed real-time imaging of magnetic tapes for forensic analysis in collaboration with
the FBI. He is currently working in the area of Quantum Computing to improve
coherence of macroscopic quantum systems using superconducting materials as well as

Stephen Joffe, Martial Artist/Biochemist/Poet

Stephen Joffe is Master of Eastern Science, as a teacher of 30 years experience, he has taught Worldwide and across many audiences; all the way from USA Olympic Gymnasts to Special Forces and everywhere in-between. Originally trained as a Biochemist, Stephen worked on an anti-HIV drug design team at the CDC; disillusioned with inanimate Western Science, he decided to teach people according to the dynamic life promoting tradition of martial arts. With a wealth of experience and deep knowledge of a variety of meditative practices; Stephen has developed a unique energy-based teaching method: all learning, and any personal gauge on evolution within the ancient body wisdom disciplines he teaches, is centered on progress of the individual’s energy system. Jean Biz Hertzberg, Mechanical Engineering

Dr. Hertzberg is currently Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at CU-Boulder. She teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in measurement techniques, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, design and computer tools. She has pioneered a spectacular course on the art and physics of flow visualization, and is conducting research on the impact of the course with respect to visual perception and educational outcomes. Her disciplinary research centers around pulsatile, vortex dominated flows with applications in both combustion and bio-fluid dynamics. She is also interested in a variety of flow field measurement techniques. Peter Hallam, Astrophysics

Peter Hallam works as the Laboratory Manager for the academic laboratories in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Denver. He teaches classes in astronomy and experimental physics, specializing in uncertainty analysis, quantum mechanics, special relativity, computerized data acquisition and programming, electronics, and control systems. Peter holds and M.S. degree in physics from Colorado State University (1998), and a M.S. in business management (2006) specializing in organizational behavior, strategic interaction, ethics and game theory from the Daniels College of Business at the University of Denver.

James Hoskins, Cello and Bouzouki

James Hoskins is a multi-instrumentalist living in the foothills of Boulder, Colorado. Primarily known for his use of the cello in a wide variety of genres, he has also performed regularly on gadulka(a Bulgarian folk-fiddle), and other Balkan and Turkish folk instruments, in addition to singing in Greek, Arabic, and Turkish, and has been an ongoing (and founding) member of the Boulder-based Balkan/Middle-Eastern band “Sherefe” for 20 years. James has in the last few years been avidly playing the Greek bouzouki due to a deep and growing love of Rebetika music. He has been a modern-dance accompanist for 24 years, and also loves performing in improvisational settings such as “Playback Theater”, Music Meditations, and for Poetry readings. James has contributed to many studio recordings, usually in the capacity of creating original cello parts, and soloing. One interesting job was creating layered cello parts for the Mötörhead album “1916” in Hollywood, where he and his wife Biz Hertzberg lived from 1987-1991. He also played many tours in Japan for 10 years, a few times per year, with vocalist/guitarist/arranger Akemi Iwase as a duo in which he played cello, Djembe, and sang in Japanese. james.cellohoskins@gmail.com

Egemen Kesikli, Oud, Turkish Banjo and Flute

Egemen Kesikli is a Turkish composer, conductor, and educator, who has been honored with numerous performances across North America, Asia, and Europe. Egemen’s music has been heard Forum Wallis, New York Composers Concordance, Belvedere Chamber Music Festival, Izmir International Music Festival, among other festivals and venues. He received honors and recognition from the American Composers Orchestra, ASCAP, Beethoven Club Memphis, the Eczacibasi Foundation, and the Minnesota Music Educators Association. Egemen has received his Doctorate of Musical Arts degree from the University of Colorado Boulder, Master’s in Composition from the University of Texas at Austin, and Bachelor’s in Music Theory & Composition from St. Olaf College with Departmental Distinction. His primary teachers and mentors include Carter Pann, Dan Welcher, Daniel Kellogg, Donald Grantham, Guher & Suher Pekinel, and Timothy Mahr.

Bear Limvere, Native American Flute

Bear Limvere Bear is of Estonian and unregistered Colorado Ute descent, and grew up in the mountains of Colorado, spending many summers of his childhood in New Mexico. Bear’s love of music is probably at the deepest core of his being. He loves to share the gift of music with people. He has studied Classical Music and Jazz on the acoustic bass, and has played bass with the DSO, and various touring jazz musicians. Bear was introduced to the Native American Flute in 1990, and he was hooked. Bear loves the tonal warmth of wooden flutes; he creates unique music full of heart and soul. He has performed in solo concerts and with ensembles of piano, cello, guitar and other instruments. Bear’s music blends traditional Native American flute with the influences of Jazz, Blues and Estonian Folk music. Bear is also a visual artist; turning, sculpting, and carving wood; weaving traditional Estonian belts; and working in other media. Bear has been a pow-wow dancer since he was 6, and regularly goes home to Southern Ute Reservation for Beardance and other ceremonies. Since 1985, Bear was a founder and continues to serve as director of The Raven Dancers, a non-profit group that teaches Native American dance, music and culture to youth, while providing a “safe place” for kids and adults in a turbulent world. He served 3 years as Board President for the Denver Museum of Miniatures, Dolls and Toys. Cara Cruickshank, Moderator and Host



Cara is a Brazilian/American living in Boulder and Paris. As a woman living in 3 cultures, she has a first-hand, intersectional view on cross-cultural themes. She has a broad background in social entrepreneurship in performing arts, education, business management, childhood development, women’s empowerment, environmentalism, and public events. She has independently produced and curated hundreds of performances and events in the U.S. and abroad (including Turkey, France and Brazil). Her work has been consistently celebrity and media acclaimed. Cara founded Café de la Culture in 2011 to promote diversity, arts and culture. She recently premiered her international, theater production The Alchemy of Imperfection: An Intimate Portayal of Global Women in Paris, LA and Boulder.
