What is an Artist Collective?
Artist Collective’s have occured throughout history, though in modern form they tend to be smallish groups of two to eight artists who produce work, either collaboratively or as individuals toward exhibiting together in gallery shows or public spaces. The aims of an Artist Collective can include almost anything that is relevant to the needs of the artist(s); this can range from purchasing bulk materials, sharing equipment, space or materials, through to following shared ideologies, aesthetic, social, environmental, or political views, or even living and working together as an extended family. Collective’s offer the benefit of time, space, and collaborative time away from the usual workaday world.
How does ARTIST COLLECTIVE work?
The artists-in-residency will be invited or selected through a formal process. From here, an event will be created through Facebook in which everyone will be able to communicate with each other for and about the event. If you are selected you are required to pay $10.00 to me, Brandon Stroud, to contribute to the payment of the campsite. The site, #91, is arguably the most beautiful and spacious site on the land, tucked away by lush wildlife and up an inclined path, steps away from amenities (electric, restroom, parking, shop) and recreation, and the lake. Provided for you will be a large pavillion tent set-up over the eating area, basic outdoor supplies (incluidng first-aid), and a comfortable three-person tent for the male artists. Absolutely no supplies will be provided for you to make art with – everyone must bring their own. Such with food, I ask that every member brings a variety of food to throw into the pot for the group.
The reservation has officially been booked from 3:00 p.m. on Friday, September 27th to 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 29th. You have approximately 48 hours to complete a project in the artistic medium you have been selected for based on the theme chosen for the event; the theme will not be revealed to the artists until the day they arrive so there is no prior preperation (everything must be made within the structure of the collective). There are not many rules but you must keep in mind that we must be safe to ourselves, others, and to the surrounding natural environment – *note the other campers and families on the grounds who are trying to enjoy themselves.
During the operating hours of our work, signs will be posted around the grounds notifying the public (campers and workers on-site) that they are invited to observe and interact with us, the artists, as we create works of varying media. The finished works must be completed by 1:00 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29th and will be open to all those staying at the park from ___________ at ___________. The entire event, including the artists’ work, will be documented by photo, audio, video, and journal and be available to view on this site (bmstroud.com) post-event; the documentation will also be shared through a blog/website through the 100TPC website.
